An interior decorator, while being involved in decoration tasks, is also responsible for ensuring the functionality, efficiency and safety of a space within the home or other building.

Therefore, interior decorating requires an understanding of construction, lighting, colour and furniture. Interior decorators are able to rearrange the interior of the home to better suit the needs of the client.

This may include relocating a kitchen or a bathroom for better access and functionality. As well as making changes to the home, interior decorators will ensure that the new interior matches the architecture of the home and that the inside and the outside of the building work together.

An interior decorator is responsible for:

  • talking with clients and architects to find out what the client needs and to ensure that safety requirements are complied with
  • developing designs that are functional, look good and suit the client’s needs
  • preparing working drawings for interior construction
  • selecting materials, finishes, lighting, furnishings and other equipment
  • preparing cost estimates for materials and labour and gaining approval from the client
  • organising and supervising tradespeople
  • carrying out inspections
  • working with specialists to ensure that fire, building codes, engineering and other safety requirements are met

As the interior decorator is responsible for surface design, they are highly experianced.  It is important that you feel comfortable with your professional so take the time to talk to them and find out if they share your vision for the home.

Thinking about painting your home in line with the latest colour trends? Not sure what the latest colour trends are? Well, Dulux has released their hottest colours for the season and there really is something for everyone. The focus this season is to mix style with individuality in order to suit the personality of the homeowner. Confidence is key!

So what are the new palettes in Dulux’s Colour Generation?

Vintage Paradox - Photo courtesy of DuluxVintage Paradox: as the name suggests, this is a modern approach to the vintage and Art Deco movements. Colours are strong with blacks, whites and neutrals combine to dominate in many different styles.

The blacks are not true blacks but rather have hints of purples, greys and blues which contrast amazingly with the many different types of whites.

Natural Essence - Photo courtesy of Dulux

Natural Essence: this colour palette takes its cue from nature.

The rich colours are inspired by the environment and include earthy greens and browns, reddish chestnuts and sandy hues that are reminiscent of sand dunes.

Moving Aura - Photo courtesy of DuluxMoving Aura: this palette is all about intriguing, yet subtle, shine and reflection. This is the metallic palette with new shades of gold, copper, bronze and pewter.

There are even metallic blacks and reds, which look amazing and really ramp up the wow factor of a room. Metallic colours combine well with neutral and bold colours.

Intristic Edge - Photo courtesy of Dulux

Intrinsic Edge: these are non-traditional colours but look amazing anyway. Unique blends of colours are the key here, with muted and clean tones coming together.

Colours in this collection include earthy browns and ochres, pastel pinks, purples and blues and dark blueish-greens.

Self Reflection - Photo courtesy of Dulux

Self Reflection: the aim of this colour palette is to create a feeling of calmness and serenity in the home.

This is achieved by using calming blues, soft grey-ish greens, coloured greys, apple greens, and mushroom pinks. These colours are great for creating an area to relax and unwind.

Techno Rush - Photo courtesy of Dulux

Techno Rush: as you may have guessed from the name, this is the palette with the really dazzling colours.

Features include hot reds and pinks, cobalt blue, tangerine, bright white and even an almost-but-not-quite lime green!

As you can see, there is something to suit any home, and any taste. Don’t be afraid, experiment with the bold, new colour styles and you’ll have a home that reflects the unique you in no time at all!

Interior Decorating

Photo courtesy of SuntecaAn interior decorator is concerned with decorating a room using paint, wallpaper, flooring, lighting, furnishings and other surface materials so that the room is attractive and easy to use.

They do not make any structural changes to the house but work with the home “as it is”.

Interior decoration is a design field and as such, professionals are fully trained and qualified.

Interior decorators work closely with their clients in order to discover exactly what look or style that the client is hoping to achieve in their home. They have links with suppliers of various materials such as paint, furnishings, flooring etc and can usually find exactly what you are after.

This saves you time in sourcing the materials for the home and often they can get the perfect piece at a cheaper price.

Tasks that the interior decorator must perform when completing a project include:

  • measuring spaces and seeing the existing area
  • advising clients on suitable colour schemes, layout, lighting, furniture, flooring, curtains, paint, wallpaper and the hardware products that are needed
  • preparing sketches, designs and cost estimates
  • sourcing fittings, furnishings and decorations
  • supervising the project and associated tradespeople (e.g. furniture arrangement, painters, electricians)

As well as this, the interior decorator must remain abreast of current trends and new materials.

Feng Shui

Feng Shui (pronounced Foong Schway) literally means “Wind and Water” and it is a way of creating a harmonious environment within the home. Feng Shui helps us to understand how energy moves throughout the home and provides ways of maximizing the benefits of good energy and minimizing any harmful effects of poor energy. To this end, Feng Shui is about balance. Feng Shui is practised by professionals but an interior decorator may understand the basic principles.

Considerations

Photos courtesy of DuluxIn Feng Shui, both the elements that we can see and the elements that we can’t see are considered. The elements that can be seen include the placement of doors and adjacent buildings for example, the furnishings, or the slope of the block.

The unseen elements refer more to how the elements that you can see will affect you, and therefore it is more about the energies. The unseen elements can attract positive or negative energies and the goal of Feng Shui is to balance these – this is often why it is thought of as the “acupuncture” of buildings as it corrects the building’s energy pathways, allowing more positive energies to flow through.

Feng Shui practitioners will consider the following things and more when looking at your home:

  • the energy of the site and surrounding environment
  • the balance between the internal and the external of the home
  • the flow and relationship between the rooms in the home
  • the kind of energy that the building attracts e.g. prosperity, luck, negative energies that cause arguments or listlessness etc
  • the relationship between the building and the people that occupy it
  • how the layout of the home and the furnishings interact with each other
  • the best place to put “lucky objects” in order to improve the home’s Feng Shui

Feng Shui Tips

Photos courtesy of DuluxWhile it is a good idea to use the services of a professional to ensure that your home has optimal Feng Shui, there are some simple tips that you can follow yourself to improve the energies in your home:
  • Remove clutter! Clutter and unwanted belongings leads to a blockage in the flow of energy.
  • Avoid having TVs and other electrical equipment in the bedroom as the electrical fields are disturbing and can potentially damage your health
  • Always keep plants pruned, healthy and free of dead growth
  • Repair flaking paint – this encourages tiredness
  • Ensure that your home has good ventilation and plentiful fresh air
  • Try and locate bedrooms so that they are facing towards the east
  • Keep your home well maintained and fix any leaks in windows, roofs or taps
  • Ensure that your front door is kept clear and out of alignment with trees or telegraph poles etc. Wide, well-lit, curving paths to the front door are particularly lucky, and the front door should always open in to reveal a wide open space.

Hiring a Feng Shui Consultant

Photos courtesy of DuluxFeng Shui professionals are highly trained and have years of experience. When it comes to choosing a professional, it is not necessarily a case of the cheaper the better. It is more important to choose someone that you feel comfortable with and that you have confidence in.

Feng Shui consultations should involve a form of building astrology as well as your personal Feng Shui Astrology, so that the professional is able to see how you will interact with the building. The professional should also focus on the forms and shapes in the environment, that is, taking into account the outside influences such as intersections, parks, neighbouring buildings and so forth.

Finally, the consultation should provide remedies that will enhance the positive aspects of your home and reduce or eliminate any negative aspects
